Sherry L. (Jones) Spencer of Mena, Arkansas (formerly of Waldron, Arkansas) went to be with her Lord and Savior, Wednesday, February 24, 2016 in Mena, Arkansas surrounded by her loving family. Sherry was born December 21, 1945 to Richard Hall Jones and Myrtie (McKay) Jones in Wilton, Arkansas. Sherry was 70 years, 2 months and 10 days old. Sherry was a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Mena, Arkansas.
As a young lady, Sherry attended Mena High School. In September of 1962, Sherry married the love of her life, Ben "Gene" Spencer. They moved to Abilene Texas in 1972. They moved back to Waldron, Arkansas in 1981. Sherry was in the restaurant business for many years and was notorious for her delicious pies. She was also involved in child care and was a care giver for most of her life. For many years Sherry provided Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to the elderly, handicapped and shut-ins. Sherry started the "Scott Co. Fund for the Handicapped", which was inspired by her grandson. Sherry was awarded a plaque from then Gov. Bill Clinton for her community service. She also was honored as "Woman of the Year" by the Mayor of Scott Co. for her contributions. Sherry served on the Waldron City Council and received a special certificate for her work with the handicapped and community activities. Her home was always open to anyone who needed help, especially children. Sherry and her son Dennis moved to Mena in 2013 after she became ill with cancer. She still was very involved making pies for church and friends.
Sherry leaves behind to cherish her memory, three daughters: Teresa L. Ashlock and husband Kendel of Waldron, Arkansas, Tamara L. Richmond of Waldron, Arkansas and Laura L. Lawson of Mena, Arkansas, as well as one son, Dennis E. Spencer of Mena, Arkansas and one sister, Joyce Green of Fayetteville, Arkansas. Granny will forever remain in the hearts of her five grandchildren: Brandi Manning, Wesley "Scott" Lawson, Krystin R. Scantling all of Waldron, Arkansas, Casey Richmond of Ft. Smith, Arkansas and Jorden L. Lawson of Mena, Arkansas as well as five great grandchildren. Sherry will be missed by all that knew her and the many whose lives were impacted by her including a host of nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and loved ones.
Sherry was preceded in death by her husband Ben Eugene "Gene" Spencer, her parents, Richard and Myrtie Jones, two sisters: Barbara Bonny and Brenda Blanton, four brothers: Marion Jones, Kenneth Jones, David Jones and Jerry Jones as well as one grandson, Justin Spencer.
Sherry's life celebration will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Waldron, Arkansas with Gene Gullick officiating. Interment will follow in Kirk Cemetery in Cauthron, Arkansas. There will also be a memorial service at the First Freewill Baptist Church in Mena, Arkansas to be announced at a later time. Arrangements are being entrusted to the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in Waldron, Arkansas.
Sherry's pallbearers will be Scott Lawson, Casey Richmond, Brandi Manning, Honorary pallbearer will be Dennis Spencer.
Sherry's visitation will be Friday, February 26, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Heritage Memorial Funeral Home in Waldron, Arkansas where Sherry's family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
